Engine Models

Nichols-Shepard produced many engines of varying horsepower over the years. This page organizes the engines into basic categories revolving around horsepower, single or double cylinder, and side or rear mount.

Types and Characteristics

Nichols-Shepard engines evolved over the years with many offerings of types of engines in portable, traction, locomotive or return flue, side mount or rear mount, single or double engine, etc. Characteristic details of levers, guide styles, tank placements, valve gear, wheel options, etc, can help refine when an engine was built.

Serial Numbers

An engine serial number makes the engine unique and traceable just like a VIN on an automobile. Even though Nichols-Shepard did not maintain detailed records of serial numbers, a given serial number can closely date an engine usually to a specific year, or at least within a couple year span.

Engine Memorandum Ledgers

Engine build ledgers exist for the model years 1887 through 1893 spanning serial numbers 2377 to 4691. Much detail is known about these engines including the exact day they were built.
